This is the egg case for the familiar marine gastropod called a whelk which belongs to the family Buccinidae. There are three species of whelk in Rhode Island: channeled whelk (*Busycotypus canaliculatus*), knobbed whelk (*Busycon carica*), and lightning whelk (*Busycon sinistrum*).
